Manuka Honey

Monofloral Manuka Honey UMF™ 10+ MGO 261, 500 g

The New Zealand company ApiHealth's UMF™ 10+ monofloral manuka honey is a high-class natural product with certified origin, created to support the immune system, digestive comfort, and overall well-being.

Main benefits:

  • Supports the immune system and the body's natural defenses
  • Maintains a healthy balance in the digestive system
  • It is suitable for seasonal ailments and increased risk of viral diseases.
  • Has antioxidant effects and supports cellular protection
  • Can also be used topically for skin irritations

The honey is extracted exclusively from the flowers of Leptospermum scoparium , the authentic New Zealand Manuka bush, rich in unique bioactive compounds. Each batch is laboratory tested and certified by the UMF™ system, with a guaranteed content of methylglyoxal (MGO) 261+ mg/kg, the active ingredient responsible for the characteristic antimicrobial action of this type of honey. The biological activity in the product is 10+, which is sufficient to support health with daily use.

Methylglyoxal is the main active ingredient in manuka honey, but it is not added, but is formed naturally. It all starts with a substance called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is found in the nectar of the plant’s flowers. When bees collect the nectar and turn it into honey, the DHA remains in it. Over time and under the right conditions, such as temperature and storage, the DHA is converted to methylglyoxal.

This process is slow. Even after honey is harvested and stored in jars, it continues to accumulate MGO. The more DHA there is in the nectar, the higher the final MGO content will be. That is why producers often wait some time after harvest before analyzing the honey and certifying it under the UMF™ system, which takes into account its biological activity.

Methylglyoxal itself is not a new discovery. It was first isolated in 1914 by German chemist Wilhelm August Scholz, who obtained it by oxidizing acetone. It is a small, highly reactive compound that is also found in the human body during the breakdown of sugars.

But it wasn’t until 2006 that it became clear that MGO was what gave manuka honey its unique antimicrobial properties. This discovery was made by the team of Prof. Thomas Henle from the Technical University of Dresden. Until then, it was believed that the antimicrobial effect of all types of honey was due to the enzyme peroxidase. Prof. Henle’s results changed the way this type of honey was classified and evaluated, and gave rise to MGO markings – such as MGO 100+, MGO 250+, MGO 400+ – depending on the concentration of the active substance.

In clinical and laboratory studies, Manuka honey with a UMF™ content of 10+ and above has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria, such as Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus and others that can cause infections in the digestive and respiratory systems. In addition, it creates a protective film on the mucous membranes, thereby reducing the risk of inflammation and facilitating recovery.

Honey has a thick and smooth texture, a mild taste with light herbal notes and a long-lasting sensation of sweetness. It is suitable for direct consumption, can also be used in cooking or for topical application to the skin.

The 500g package is enough for about a month and a half with regular use of 1 teaspoon daily.
