The liquid nutritional supplement Karczoch is produced from the leaves of the artichoke plant ( Cynara scolymus L), which has been known for millennia in the countries around the Mediterranean as food and medicine. It was also described by the famous ancient physician and pharmacist Dioscurides, who included it in his pharmacopoeia De Materia Medica . People considered it not only a delicacy but also a powerful aphrodisiac and believed that consuming it would provide them with a male heir.
It will probably sound surprising to many, but artichokes are among the plants with the highest antioxidant content on the planet. This, together with the abundance of vitamins and minerals in its composition, explains its numerous and varied health effects. Although the middle fleshy part is the most highly valued on the table, the main part of the useful substances is concentrated in the leaves of the plant.
Among the phytochemicals that provide artichokes with an impressive ORAC index (indicator of free radical absorbance capacity), the compounds quercetin, rutin, gallic acid and cynarin stand out. All of them limit oxidative damage to cells, thereby preventing pathological changes and lowering the risk of severe chronic diseases.
Artichoke leaves are a rich source of silymarin, a phytochemical most commonly associated with milk thistle. Together with cynarin, it supports the regeneration of liver cells, stimulates the production of bile juice, optimizes the function of the bile and improves the protection of the liver against toxins, environmental pollutants and carcinogens.
The increased secretion of bile juice supports not only the detoxification of the body, but also the digestive processes. Mixed with gastric juices, it facilitates the breakdown and absorption of food. The artichoke also contains the prebiotic inulin, which improves the balance of intestinal microflora and the protection of the gastrointestinal tract from harmful pathogens.
