Proteases are a class of enzymes that help digest proteins. There are several different types, including trypsin, chymotrypsin, and carboxypeptidase. They work by breaking down proteins (peptide bonds) into smaller and smaller peptides. Peptidases, which are found on the surface of epithelial cells in the small intestine, are then able to break down the peptides into single amino acids (the “building blocks of proteins”).

Lipases

Lipase is produced by the pancreas, and this enzyme helps break down fats. It converts triglycerides into 2-monoglycerides and two free fatty acids so that they can be absorbed through the intestinal lining. Pancreatic lipase is secreted into the lumen of the intestine. In order for lipase to do its job properly, bile salts must be present to aid in the absorption of fats. A lack of lipase interferes with the digestion of fats and the absorption of essential fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, E, D, and K). It can also cause gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea and/or fatty stools.

Amylases (Amylise)

Amylase (or alpha-amylase) is an enzyme secreted by the salivary glands and pancreas that helps digest carbohydrates. Amylase hydrolyzes starch into smaller molecules called maltose (a glucose-glucose disaccharide) and the trisaccharide maltotriose. Some pancreatic amylase is present in saliva, helping to start the digestive process when you start chewing your food, but most is produced in the pancreas. A lack of amylase can cause digestive problems such as bloating, loose stools, and diarrhea.
