Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble compound of key importance for maintaining the normal physiological state of a number of organs and systems. Its main natural source is sunlight. When exposed to UV rays, the skin synthesizes cholecalciferol, which is subsequently activated in the liver and kidneys. This is the most biologically active form of vitamin D and is characterized by high absorbability, especially when taken in an appropriate nutritional form.
Vitamin D3 plays a central role in calcium-phosphorus metabolism. It promotes the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus, two essential minerals for the formation and maintenance of healthy bone and tooth structure. In case of deficiency of the vitamin, bone mineralization is impaired, which increases the risk of osteomalacia, osteoporosis and related fractures.
