ITOH KAMPO® Blueberry lutein plus
Bilberry + lutein complex and vitamin A
Supports visual function, protects against light stress and fatigue, promotes long-term eye health through strong antioxidant action
Blueberry lutein plus is a high-quality dietary supplement developed in Japan by ITOH KAMPO, an established manufacturer of innovative nutraceuticals.
The supplement combines standardized bilberry extract, lutein and zeaxanthin from marigold, as well as vitamin A to create a comprehensive formula aimed at maintaining, protecting and restoring vision in the conditions of a modern lifestyle. Suitable for people of all ages, especially with increased visual strain and risk of degenerative eye conditions.
Main effects on vision and eye health
● Supports the physiological structure and function of the macula and retina
● Helps neutralize oxidative stress in sensitive eye tissues
● Increases the eye's resistance to prolonged exposure to blue light
● Improves visual adaptation at dusk and in dark environments
● Maintains the elasticity and permeability of capillaries in the retina
● Helps reduce the feeling of fatigue, dryness and irritation in the eyes
● Stimulates the synthesis of visual pigments and photoreceptor processes
● Participates in the prevention of degenerative changes in the macula
● Contributes to the overall antioxidant protection of eye cells
● Has a beneficial effect on blood circulation and metabolic processes in eye tissues
What does Blueberry lutein plus contain?
The formula of this Japanese product is built with scientific precision and contains fully biocompatible active ingredients, each of which plays a specific role in maintaining eye health. The synergy between them increases the effectiveness of the supplement and makes it particularly suitable for the prevention and maintenance of normal visual function.
● Bilberry – Bilberry is a low-growing shrub, common in the forest regions of Europe and northern Asia. The fruit is small, with a deep dark blue color. The fruits of the bilberry are
rich in anthocyanidins – natural flavonoids with a polyphenolic structure that give the fruits their dark color and have powerful antioxidant activity. They dissolve in water, are easily absorbed and act directly on the blood and eye tissue.
● Lutein is a plant carotenoid from the group of xanthophylls. These are yellow-orange pigments found in leafy vegetables and plant flowers, most often extracted from the petals of marigolds. Structurally, lutein is a molecule with 40 carbon atoms and multiple double bonds, which allows it to neutralize free radicals. Unlike other carotenoids, lutein is not converted to vitamin A, but accumulates in the macula of the retina, where it plays a role as a natural blue light filter.
● Zeaxanthin – It is also a xanthophyll carotenoid and is an isomer of lutein, i.e. it has the same chemical formula, but a different spatial arrangement. It is most often found in corn, marigolds and orange peppers. In the human body, it is concentrated mainly in the central part of the macula, where it participates in the construction of the macular pigment. Zeaxanthin is one of the few nutritional components that penetrate directly into the retinal tissues and provide selective photo-protection from short-wave light.
● Vitamin A - A fat-soluble vitamin whose active forms in the human body include retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid. Retinyl palmitate is often used in supplements - a stable, esterified form of retinol bound to palmitic acid. This is a chemical compound that is easily absorbed in the small intestine and stored in the liver. The body then converts it to retinal - a form necessary for the synthesis of rhodopsin - a pigment responsible for vision in low light. Vitamin A is also essential for maintaining the health of the cornea and conjunctival epithelium.
How the supplement affects visual function – mechanism of action
Protection from light damage and blue light
One of the main benefits of the supplement is its ability to protect the eyes from photochemical stress caused by exposure to blue light – a component of the light spectrum with a short wavelength but high energy. Constant exposure to blue light from screens, LED lighting and solar radiation leads to the accumulation of oxidative stress in the macula. Lutein and zeaxanthin absorb this light before it reaches the sensitive cells in the retina, reducing the risk of macular degeneration and photodamage.
Antioxidant function against eye aging
The eye is an organ exposed to high oxygen concentrations and intense photon exposure, making it extremely susceptible to oxidative damage. With age, the body's own antioxidant defenses
decrease, which increases the risk of cataracts, retinopathies and macular degeneration. Bilberry anthocyanidins, combined with vitamin A and carotenoids, provide a comprehensive antioxidant shield that maintains the viability of photoreceptors and prevents degenerative processes in the eye tissue.
Improving night vision and adaptation to darkness
Retinyl palmitate in the composition provides the necessary precursor for the formation of rhodopsin - a light-sensitive pigment in the rods of the retina. In case of vitamin A deficiency, serious deterioration of vision in low light conditions (the so-called "night blindness") is observed. The supplement compensates for this by supplying the body with a stable and easily digestible form of the vitamin, helping the eye adapt to a changing light environment.
Maintaining blood circulation in the eyes and surrounding tissues
Anthocyanidins from bilberry have the ability to enhance capillary microcirculation by stimulating nitric oxide and improving the elasticity of the vascular walls. Improved blood flow in the retina and choriocapillaris ensures a better supply of oxygen and nutrients, as well as a more efficient removal of waste products and free radicals from the ocular tissue.
Relieving visual fatigue and maintaining comfort during visual strain
Visual fatigue is among the most common complaints in the digital age – dryness, blurring, burning and pain behind the eyes. The combination of active ingredients in the Blueberry lutein plus formula works synergistically to restore the sensitive ocular surface, stabilize the tear film and maintain the tone of the ciliary muscle responsible for lens accommodation. This leads to faster recovery after exertion and increased visual endurance.
