The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) is more of a shrub that grows in the Mediterranean region. From Portugal, on one side of the Mediterranean Sea, to Turkey, on the other. It was known and widely used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to treat various gastrointestinal problems. In fact, ancient Greek physicians, such as Hippocrates and Dioscorides, mentioned its properties and recommended its use. The astringent and aromatic qualities of the tree’s bark were traditionally used to freshen breath and tighten gums.
Mastic gum is a natural product that has been used for over 2,500 years to promote intestinal, stomach, and liver health. However, it was not until the mid-1980s that researchers confirmed the efficacy of mastic gum in supporting the cells and tissues of the stomach and duodenum. Taking one gram daily has been found to be safe and effective in supporting gastric health. In addition to its antioxidant properties, scientists also believe that mastic gum is beneficial in balancing gastric secretions.
Mastic gum has also been used for centuries to promote oral hygiene. In fact, modern research suggests that mastic gum may be an effective tool for promoting healthy teeth and gums. Additionally, a study published April 20, 2007 in the journal Ethnopharmacology indicated that the gum may have hepatoprotective and cardioprotective properties in humans. Previous animal studies have shown that mastic gum supports liver health.
