Chitosan / Chitosan of the German company Karl Minck Naturheilmittel is a dietary supplement that contains chitosan from shellfish in powder form. The product contributes to the maintenance of normal body weight. Chitosan is a fibrous substance that can reduce the amount of fat and cholesterol that the body absorbs from food.
Mussels can be a great addition to a weight loss diet. Crustaceans are high in healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids and nutrients such as vitamin B12 and zinc.
Chitosan is derived from chitin, a fibrous compound found primarily on the hard exoskeletons of crustaceans such as shrimp, lobsters and crabs.
The beneficial effect of chitosan as a dietary supplement is found in the reduction of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides due to its ability to bind dietary lipids, thus reducing their intestinal absorption. The hypolipidemic effect of chitosan is also due to interruption of the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids. Chitosan works by forming a specific gel in the intestinal tract that traps lipids and other nutrients and thus prevents their absorption.
Chitosan inhibits the growth of microorganisms, including Candida, and has a protective effect in infections with pathogenic bacteria. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties and promotes wound healing, improves immune response and has antitumor activity.

- Lowered cholesterol levels
Chitosan has an effect on cholesterol levels. It lowers both total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Although HDL (good) cholesterol is not affected, chitosan supplementation can be an effective part of a cholesterol management plan.
- It can reduce arterial blood pressure values
Chitosan administration significantly reduced diastolic blood pressure at higher doses, but had no effect on systolic blood pressure.
Research shows that chitosan-based compounds may be beneficial for wound healing. They have antimicrobial activity, fighting gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
- It may have antitumor effects
Recent studies have shown that chitosan and its derivatives exhibit antitumor activity. It has been shown, in both in vitro and in vivo models, to increase T-lymphocyte production. The researchers also found that chitooligosaccharides, which are products of chitosan metabolism, suppressed the growth of tumor formations in mice with lung cancer.
