Nattokinase , also known as Natto extract (a traditional Japanese ingredient and food), is an enzyme from fermented soybeans. It is made by cooking soybeans and then fermenting them by adding the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto.
This ingredient was discovered and extracted in 1987 when Natto was found to dissolve artificial fibrin (an insoluble protein involved in the formation of blood clots).
Despite its name, nattokinase is not a kinase enzyme. It belongs to the serine protease family of enzymes that work to break down other proteins. Mechanisms of action studied in animal or human cells are as follows:
- It directly cuts cross-linked fibrin
- Increases the release of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) from cells, which also destroys fibrin
- Increases urokinase levels by converting endogenous prourokinase to urokinase. More of this enzyme will result in more plasmin in the blood, which is responsible for breaking down fibrin
- Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking thromboxane (a substance released from platelets that causes blood to clot and constrict blood vessels)
Nattokinase, absorbed into the blood, increases its fluidity. Due to this, the general condition of the body improves.
