What is Maca?

Pure Nutrition's Maca is a dietary supplement with a single ingredient - powder from the maca plant, beneficial for prostate health, libido, cognitive function, and a number of other biological processes in the human body.

"Maca" is the popular name for the plant Lepidium meyenii, a member of the Cruciferous family, which also includes the well-known vegetables cauliflower and broccoli, as well as mustard and turnip. Despite the lack of physical resemblance, the plant is sometimes called "Peruvian ginseng" because it is grown exclusively in Peru, and because of its ginseng-like effects.

In the traditions of the Incas and other Indian tribes of the high Andes, the use of maca is associated with increased fertility and general tone in both men and women. Modern research shows a variety of benefits for the body from the use of maca, due to the wide range of bioactive components, many of which are contained only in this plant.

How does Pure Nutrition Maca work?

Maca is an endemic species of the Peruvian Andes region and grows at altitudes between 4000 and 4500 m. Its use dates back over 2000 years and has long been recognized as one of the most versatile superfoods. The plant is found in different color variations, but the most common, and most beneficial, is yellow maca.

The biologically active components are many, but perhaps the most important in terms of impact and unique only to the Lepidium meyenii species are the alkaloid macaridine and macaenes – the unsaturated fatty acids of maca. Research clearly indicates that macaridine is the most potent bioactive alkaloid in the plant and one of the main reasons for the consumption of supplements containing maca.

Initially, people began consuming maca as an aphrodisiac to increase libido and strengthen sexual function. It is interesting to note that maca does not improve libido through hormonal regulation, but rather affects the conduction of neurons, and for this reason it works on both sexes.

The effects of maca increase with accumulation after regular use for at least 4 weeks, reaching their peak after the eighth week.

Macaenes, the unique fatty acids in the maca plant, positively affect men's prostate health in a different way than usual. Researchers suggest that maca reduces the level of zinc in the prostate, which is responsible for the transformation of testosterone into DHT. By blocking the anabolic effects of DHT on prostate cells, maca helps prevent prostate enlargement.
