Chicory coffee is a completely soluble powder obtained by the method of water extraction. It contains the beneficial substances from the roasted roots of the plant, including large amounts of inulin, manganese, phosphorus, vitamins C and B6, potassium and folate. Since it does not contain caffeine, chicory coffee is suitable for people with heart problems. It can be a safe alternative for people with hypertension, depression, insomnia and neurosis. At the same time, chicory drink energizes and promotes mental and physical activity.
Chicory is a very important source of soluble fiber - inulin, which is difficult to obtain from the daily diet. Inulin is a polysaccharide - a prebiotic, which is food for beneficial bacteria in the intestines, while inhibiting the reproduction of harmful ones. By helping to normalize the intestinal microflora, chicory plays a role in many metabolic processes. Inulin can lower low-density cholesterol, also known as "bad cholesterol". It is believed that inulin can increase the body's absorption of calcium, a trace element important for strengthening and forming bone tissue.
Chicory has a beneficial effect on people with elevated blood sugar levels. A study was conducted in which participants were divided into two groups: one was given inulin, and the other - a placebo. Over time, participants in the first group showed increased levels of antioxidants in the blood and increased cellular sensitivity to insulin. Those who took inulin slightly reduced their weight. A decrease in glycated hemoglobin values was recorded.
Chicory has a slightly bitter taste and promotes the production of bile. This is beneficial for people with gallbladder problems or bile stasis, such as biliary dyskinesia. By stimulating bile flow, it contributes to better digestion of fats, activation of pancreatic enzymes and the elimination of toxins.
Chicory is considered one of the oldest plants used by humans. The plant is mentioned in ancient Egyptian medical texts. Native to the Mediterranean and Eurasia, chicory is now widely distributed and naturalized for production purposes. In ancient Egypt, it was believed to help purify the blood and normalize digestion, and was also used to improve liver function. In medieval Europe, chicory was grown in monastery gardens, where monks collected and studied medicinal plants. At that time, the herb was recommended for the treatment of gallbladder diseases, as well as for improving digestion.
