Liposomes have an inner compartment in which vitamin C is located, and the outer part is made up of phospholipids, which play the role of a cell membrane. Phospholipids protect vitamin C from damage by stomach acid and liver enzymes and ensure high bioavailability of the vitamin, which easily enters the bloodstream. Thus, liposomes pass quickly through the digestive system, lymph and blood vessels. The human gut has a physiological threshold for absorbing increased levels of vitamin C. Therefore, high doses of this vitamin can lead to unpleasant consequences, such as gas and/or diarrhea.
