Natural Factors Heartburn combines the soothing and protective properties of amla extract, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), and slippery elm. This blend of clinically studied botanicals helps relieve gastrointestinal inflammation, abdominal pain, and heartburn.
Amla extract /Phyllanthus emblica/ has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to relieve symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion associated with hyperacidity (dyspepsia). It also acts as a digestive tonic that increases appetite and aids digestion. Amla extract is rich in vitamin C and antioxidant polyphenols that protect against oxidative stress and inflammation of the lining of the stomach and esophagus. It also promotes tissue healing and reduces the production of stomach acids.
DGL extract increases prostaglandin levels in the stomach lining, which helps reduce stomach acid. It stimulates the production of protective mucus, which forms a barrier against the irritating effects of acids. The flavonoids in DGL extract suppress the production of certain inflammatory substances, such as nitric oxide and certain proteins and lipids involved in the immune response.
Slippery elm extract has traditionally been used as an herbal remedy to protect the digestive tract. The inner bark of the slippery elm contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that forms a protective layer on the lining of the digestive tract when in contact with water. This protects the tissues from the irritating effects of stomach acids. Slippery elm extract is also rich in antioxidant tannins, which reduce damage from oxidative stress and inflammation in the stomach.
The combination of amla, DGL, and slippery elm extracts provides stronger support for the digestive tract than either ingredient taken alone.
