Bioflavonoids are a group of biologically active plant compounds, also known as flavonoids. Bioflavonoids were first discovered in 1936 by Nobel laureate Albert Szent-Gyorgi, known for his remarkable discoveries regarding vitamin C. He initially classified this group of compounds as “vitamin P.” Since then, over 4,000 flavonoids have been identified based on their chemical structure.
Natural bioflavonoid products can contain individual flavonoids such as quercetin (derived from onions) or complex bioflavonoids (derived from citrus fruits). The compounds found in citrus bioflavonoid supplements typically include hesperidin, rutin, quercetin, and others.
The main benefits provided by bioflavonoids relate to their antioxidant activity, proven in a number of animal and in vitro studies.
Citrus bioflavonoids are derived from fruits high in vitamin C and therefore have a synergistic effect with this vitamin. The antioxidant properties of bioflavonoids are believed to be particularly beneficial for blood vessels, especially capillaries. Citrus bioflavonoids are highly recommended for poor circulation, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, etc.
