Hawthorn has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years. Europeans began using it to treat cardiovascular disease in the 17th century. Studies conducted in the 1980s confirmed the therapeutic benefits of extracts derived from the leaves, flowers, and fruits of this herb.
The therapeutic effect of hawthorn is mainly due to its antioxidant properties. Natural Factors ' product combines the three medicinal parts of the plant - leaves, flowers and fruits - providing a full spectrum of flavonoids, including quercetin, rutin, hyperoside and vitexin. The extract is standardized to 2.2% flavonoids, which ensures precise dosing. Each capsule contains 300 mg of leaf and flower extract, as well as 165 mg of hawthorn fruit. The product does not contain preservatives, sweeteners, gluten or GMOs and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
In a multicenter placebo-controlled study of 143 patients with class II heart failure, taking hawthorn fruit extract standardized to 6.4 mg of oligomeric procyanidins daily resulted in significant improvements in physical endurance and reductions in fatigue and shortness of breath after eight weeks.
A randomized, double-blind study in patients with class II coronary artery disease showed that taking 600 mg of hawthorn leaf and flower extract for eight weeks resulted in significant improvements in physical endurance compared to a placebo group. Patients taking hawthorn extract reported reduced fatigue and improved physical performance, while the placebo group experienced deterioration.
Hawthorn extract also helps maintain normal blood pressure levels. Studies have shown that patients taking hawthorn extract experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure, while the placebo group did not experience significant changes. Another study in patients with type 2 diabetes found that taking 1,200 mg of hawthorn extract daily for 16 weeks resulted in a modest but significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure. An earlier study showed a similar effect in mild hypertension after 10 weeks of taking 500 mg of extract daily.
