What is ribose?
Ribose is a simple sugar, also known as a monosaccharide. It contains five carbon atoms and belongs to the group of pentoses. Ribose is found naturally in the human body, as well as in all plant and animal cells. In nature, it occurs mainly in the form of D-ribose. It is a colorless solid that dissolves in water and has a melting point between 90 and 95 °C. Ribose plays a key role as a component of ribonucleic acid (RNA).
