Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, composed of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid. At the chemical level, it is a polysaccharide that plays a key role in the hydration and elasticity of the skin and joints. It is produced by synovial cells in the basement membrane, acting as a semi-permeable barrier. There, it supports the metabolism of cartilage tissue and maintains the quality of synovial fluid - essential for the strength and repair of joints and cartilage.
In 1934, scientists John Palmer and Carl Mayer first isolated hyaluronic acid. Initially, it was extracted primarily from animal sources, most often from rooster combs – a practice that was risky and did not allow for complete purification from animal proteins and potentially harmful microorganisms.
