The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand crustacean, the extract of which has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Bioactive compounds in Perna canaliculus can interact positively with the gut microbiome and have applications in intra-intestinal and extra-intestinal inflammatory conditions. Green-lipped clams contain anti-inflammatory compounds such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can improve the condition of various pro-inflammatory conditions. Perna canaliculus extract has antioxidant, antihypertensive, antibacterial, antithrombotic and anticoagulant properties, which are due to the high content of proteins, peptides and amino acids.
The active ingredient in the green-lipped mussel is furanic fatty acids (F-acids). These are natural but rare and very powerful antioxidants. F-acids are fatty acids commonly found in algae and may explain their anti-inflammatory properties. Furanic fatty acids are omega-3 fatty acids that inhibit the 5'-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways, similar to anti-inflammatory drugs, but without the side effects. Blocked biochemical pathways are responsible for the production of leukotrienes and prostaglandins - substances involved in the realization of a number of inflammatory reactions.
