The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand crustacean, the extract of which has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Bioactive compounds in Perna canaliculus can interact positively with the gut microbiome and have applications in intra-intestinal and extra-intestinal inflammatory conditions. Green-lipped clams contain anti-inflammatory compounds such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can improve the condition of various pro-inflammatory conditions. The active ingredient in the green-lipped mussel is furanic fatty acids (F-acids). These are natural but rare and very powerful antioxidants.
