Astaxanthin is a natural pigment (carotenoid) that is synthesized by many bacteria, microalgae and yeast and has powerful antioxidant properties that can be used to support skin and heart health, increase endurance, treat joints and restore male fertility. The active substance in Mattisson's product - astaxanthin nataxtin™ is completely natural. Its source is the unicellular algae Haematococcus pluvialis. This algae thrives in lakes, rock pools and arctic sea areas, and it is not for nothing that it is called "red gold". Astaxanthin is vital to many aquatic animals. Crabs, lobsters, krill, salmon, trout, shrimp feed on it, which carry this pigment further up the food chain. The ketocarotenoid astaxanthin accumulates in the meat and shell of crustaceans, as well as in the meat of salmon and trout, giving them their red color. The natural pigment has some chemical similarities to the carotenes lycopene and beta-carotene, which are also plant dyes. However, it is more strongly associated with oxygenated xanthophylls, including lutein and zeaxanthin, which may improve eye health.
