Vitabay® natural dietary supplement dimethylaminoethanol ( DMAE ) is a neurotransmitter that acts as a precursor to acetylcholine and choline, which are necessary for maintaining the central nervous system, brain activity, and memory.

What are neurotransmitters:

Until the early 20th century, scientists believed that most synaptic communication was mediated by electrical impulses. Histological studies have revealed a 20 to 40 nm gap between neurons, now known as the “synaptic cleft.” The existence of this gap suggests communication through chemical ligands—neurotransmitters. The first known neurotransmitter is acetylcholine (ACh).

How are neurotransmitters synthesized:

Neurotransmitters are usually synthesized in neurons and are composed of or derived from precursor molecules found within the cell. Neurotransmitters include amino acids, monoamines, and peptides. Other neurotransmitters are composed of metabolites such as nitric oxide and carbon monoxide.

Biochemical effects of DMAE:

Dimethylaminoethanol is a tertiary amino alcohol. It participates in a series of reactions leading to the formation of acetylcholine. DMAE is essential for the synthesis of choline and acts as a precursor of choline in the liver.
