The main ingredient of the Dereń liquid nutritional supplement of the EkaMedica brand is a natural puree of the well-known common dogwood ( Cornus mas ) in Bulgaria, whose health benefits have been known to people since ancient times. An extract from the fruits of the tropical camu camu tree, known for its first place in vitamin C content, is added to it.
One of the most important virtues of dogwood berries is their high content of antioxidant compounds, including vitamin C, thanks to which they were used in the past as a remedy against scurvy. The ability of active substances to limit oxidative cell damage also helps to maintain liver health.
Dogwoods also have powerful antibacterial and antifungal potential. Scientific studies have shown that they inhibit the proliferation and activity of various pathogenic strains, including Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Micrococcus flavus, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Sarcina lutea, Shigella sonnei, Candida albicans, Salmonella enteritidis, Proteus vulgaris and Klebsiella pneumonia .
Phytochemicals in dogwood flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, phenolic compounds and triterpenoids have been found to help lower levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and the liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), thereby improving the prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome.
The cardioprotective effect of dogwoods is due to the ability of the phytochemicals in their composition to support the action of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), to lower the levels of lipid peroxides, creatine kinase, lactate hydrogenase and to support the recovery of damaged myocardial tissue.
