For thousands of years, cottonwood tea ( Cistus creticus ) has been one of the most popular beverages among the peoples of the Mediterranean. The main reason is its two main merits – its pleasant aroma and its health potential. The beautiful bushy plant with pale purple flowers, sometimes referred to as Cistus incanus, is extremely rich in beneficial phytochemicals.
Thanks to the abundance of polyphenols in its composition, the cotton plant, also known as rock rose, withstands stressors such as lack of water in the soil, high temperatures and strong sunlight for a long time. It is to these active substances, known for their antioxidant action, that the herb owes a large part of its health benefits.
The virtues of the cotton plant have been known to people since ancient times. Evidence of the deep roots of the herb in history is the fact that it is mentioned in the first book of the Old Testament - Genesis. In Ancient Greece, warriors used a decoction of the herb to treat their wounds, and their women considered it an excellent cleanser and skin care agent. In Moroccan traditional medicine, tea was extremely popular for maintaining the hygiene and health of the teeth and oral cavity.
