What is xylitol?
Xylitol, birch sugar, is a natural sweetener that is extracted from the bark of the birch tree. Mattisson xylitol is extracted from European birch and has about 70% of the sweetening power of regular sugar. Xylitol has a glycemic index of 7. The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical scale that shows how quickly and how high a certain food can raise our blood glucose (blood sugar). The lower it is, the more favorable it is for blood sugar. Xylitol is an ideal substitute for cane sugar, beet sugar or other sweeteners. Adds a delicious sweet flavor to smoothies, yogurt, snacks, drinks, ice cream and other desserts. It has a laxative effect. It has no aftertaste and dissolves easily in water.
Benefits of xylitol
- Improving metabolism. The sweetener has a positive effect on metabolic processes, thereby preventing weight gain and helping to prevent the development of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. So the product is useful not only for those who already have this disease, but also for those who are prone to it.
- Strengthening teeth. There are many studies supporting the effectiveness of xylitol in strengthening teeth, which is why it is used in dental care products. Xylitol protects against cavities and strengthens enamel at a time when regular sugar, on the contrary, increases the risk of dental problems. Xylitol is also useful for oral hygiene, as the pathogenic bacteria living there do not ingest it, unlike regular sugar. Xylitol is particularly effective against Candida fungi.
- Positive effect on calcium metabolism. The effect of the sweetener on calcium metabolism has been proven, it increases its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. This action of xylitol reduces the likelihood of developing osteoporosis, a disease of brittle bones.
- Improving the condition of the skin. Xylitol activates the production of collagen, the main element responsible for the elasticity and firmness of the skin.
The specific characteristics and properties of the key ingredient - xylitol
Xylitol is a chemical compound with the formula C 5 H 12 O 5 and is a colorless or white crystalline solid that is easily soluble in water. It is extracted from birch bark, corn cobs, cotton and sunflower husks, it is also called birch sugar. The process of chemical transformation itself consists in the fact that xylose (C 5 H 10 O 5 ) is extracted from the raw material - the so-called "wood sugar", and xylose is already restored under conditions of high pressure and temperature with the participation of a number of catalysts to the sweetener xylitol. In terms of energy value, the composition of xylitol does not differ much from the sugar we are used to, but the sweetener interacts with the body in a different way. Its glycemic index is particularly valuable, if sugar has 70 units, then xylitol has 10 times less - only 7 units. Xylitol is used in folk medicine, especially often as a laxative and choleretic agent. It also relieves inflammation of the middle ear, nasopharynx and asthma symptoms. Xylitol is a good sugar substitute because it does not affect blood glucose or insulin levels and does not damage tooth enamel. Fights Candida Albicans bacterial infection. Xylitol is low in calories and good for consumption in weight loss diets.
