Methylcobalamin (Methyl B12) is an easily absorbed and easily digestible form of vitamin B12 that helps maintain brain health, vitality, restful sleep and good mood. It also plays a critical role in the detoxification of homocysteine (linked to arterial damage and other health problems) and other oxidants associated with the aging process. Methyl B12 plays an important role in the balance of brain chemicals and promotes the synthesis of neurotransmitters to improve communication between nerve cells. Finally, methyl B12 plays a strategic role in the production of oxygen in blood cells.
Methyl Folic Acid ((6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate acid or (6S)-5-MTHF) is the most biologically active form of folic acid available on the market today.
The patented Quatrefolic® formula represents the 4th generation in the development of folate delivery. In most people, due to some inherited errors in metabolism or due to various forms of physiological stress, the transformation of folic acid into the active form of folate does not occur properly or is inadequate. A better approach is to take the bioactive folate 5-MTHF directly. There is evidence that 5-MTHF dramatically increases the concentration of folate in red blood cells - an indicator of folate status - compared to folic acid supplements. This bioactive folate has up to seven times greater bioavailability than folic acid. This greater bioavailability is especially important in people who have genetic enzyme deficiencies, since it does not need to be converted to become metabolically active.
Individuals with elevated homocysteine levels are at greater risk of cognitive decline. Unlike folic acid, 5-MTHF such as Quatrefolic® can cross the blood-brain barrier, which is especially important for people with cognitive impairment to enhance the synthesis of acetylcholine in the brain – a neurotransmitter associated with memory. Studies suggest that the effectiveness of 5-MTHF can be further enhanced by supplementing with methylcobalamin (the active form of vitamin B12), vitamin B6 and riboflavin.
Pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P-5-P) is a coenzyme form of vitamin B6 and is required for the metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in numerous enzyme systems in the body. P-5-P aids in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine.
