Action:
Eucalyptus honey is produced by honey bees that pollinate the flowers of the eucalyptus tree and sometimes collect the honeydew found on the bark of these trees. It is medium dark in color and may have a red tint. It has been found that the darker the color of the eucalyptus honey, the more pronounced the reddish hue will be.
In addition to collecting the nectar in the flower, honey bees are known to feed on the honeydew from the bark of eucalyptus trees.
The moment the honey bee collects the eucalyptus nectar from the flower, it is mixed with an enzyme in the bees mouth. The enzyme itself is otherwise known as invertase or the "bee enzyme" which is secreted by the glands of honey bees.
When the honey bees return to the hive, they pass the nectar they have collected between their mouths, further mixing the nectar with "bee enzyme", reducing the water content and turning the nectar into honey.
They then deposit the eucalyptus honey into the wax cells, and to reduce the water content, the bees spread their wings over the wax cell. In this way, they evaporate some of the water.
Eucalyptus honey is used topically to treat and heal wounds, ulcers, burns, cuts, scrapes and sores. It has also been shown to be effective for insect bites and stings. It is known to relieve rheumatism, lumbago, sprains, stiffness, aches, fibrosis and nerve pain.
Eucalyptus honey is also effective in relieving nasal congestion and coughs.
It is believed to be effective in combating insomnia. There are a number of studies that prove that eucalyptus honey can treat cataracts.
