Lecithin is a substance found naturally in the tissues of the human body. Lecithin supplements are usually derived from sunflower seeds, eggs or soybeans.
It consists of fatty acids and, in particular, of phospholipids – a basic element of cell membranes. Lecithin, which is named after the Greek word for egg yolk - lekithos, was first isolated from egg yolk in 1850.
How does it work?
Once in the body, lecithin is broken down into choline, a nutrient that is important for liver health. Choline also helps turn fat into energy that our bodies can use.
Health benefits:
- It reduces the level of total cholesterol
The best-known benefit of lecithin is its ability to lower blood cholesterol levels. It contributes to raising HDL (good) cholesterol and lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood.
- It improves the functioning of the heart
Lecithin can improve cardiovascular health. The nutritional supplement lowers the risk of developing arterial hypertension or other heart disease.
Some lactation experts recommend lecithin as a means of preventing recurrent breast duct blockages and the resulting mastitis. Lecithin can reduce the viscosity of breast milk and thus lowers the risk of clogging of the milk ducts in the breast.
The emulsifying properties of lecithin contribute to a chain reaction that improves the condition of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and increases mucus production. In this way, it facilitates the digestive process and protects the delicate tissues in the gastrointestinal tract. Lecithin has been found to help the condition of people who suffer from ulcerative colitis.
- Fights the symptoms of dementia
Lecithin contains choline, a chemical that the human brain uses to perform important functions. Lecithin leads to relief of symptoms in some neurological diseases - dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
- Soothes and moisturizes the skin
Lecithin is also used as an emollient in cosmetics - it makes the skin smooth by restoring its hydration. The nutritional supplement has antioxidant properties and can improve the appearance of the skin.
Lecithin has several remarkable effects on brain function. It functions as a precursor to choline, which in turn creates the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Maintaining levels of this neurotransmitter helps maintain healthy cognitive function. The phosphatides in lecithin also help maintain cell membranes throughout the body, including the brain, which helps maintain healthy brain structure and function.
