Devil's claw - origin, action and medicinal properties
Introduced to Europe in the early 1900s, the Devil's Claw herb is native to southern Africa and is cultivated in several countries in South America, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Brazil and Argentina. In India, Devil's Claw is commonly found in Mysuru, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Bengaluru.
Devil's claw gets its name from the mini hooks that cover its fruit. It is widely used as an herbal supplement to relieve pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is also used for gout, sciatica, lumbago, muscle inflammation (myalgia) and tendinitis. Devil's claw is also believed to have an effect on the liver and is traditionally used for chronic itchy skin conditions and varicose veins.
The herb has the following actions: anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, analgesic, liver tonic, cholagogic, diuretic, sedative, detoxifying, digestive, lymphatic, stimulating, cortisone-like.
The roots of the plant contain powerful plant compounds called harpagosides that offer anti-inflammatory benefits, which in turn can help relieve joint or muscle discomfort.
While Devil's Claw has traditionally been used as a general pain reliever for muscle and joint pain - recently experts have begun to evaluate its efficacy specifically in cases of arthritis.
Known as powerful antioxidants, the flavonoids and phytosterols found in this herb fight free radicals.
Thanks to its great digestive properties, the herb can effectively affect dyspepsia, upset stomach and heartburn. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may be useful as an adjunctive treatment for these conditions, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Research has found that devil's claw can help stop or slow down the production of ghrelin (known as the "hunger hormone"). Thus, the herb can help regulate appetite, aiding weight loss.
