The Melisa liquid nutritional supplement of the EkaMedica brand is a herbal formula based on an extract from the perennial herb lemon balm ( Melissa officinalis ), widely distributed in Europe and Asia. The virtues of lemon balm have been known to people and used in various traditional medical practices for centuries. It is also mentioned in Homer's Iliad, it was also used by the Persian physician and scientist Avicenna, who wrote that it "makes the heart cheerful and happy." The plant is the main ingredient in the herbal extract Carmolis, which was created in the 14th century and is still available in pharmacies today.
Lemon balm contains a compound known as rosmarinic acid, which helps increase levels of the amino acid GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that prevents overexcitation of the nervous system and thus provides the body with an opportunity to relax and unwind. Thus, the herb contributes to improving mood and internal balance, has a positive effect on sleep cycles and limits the manifestations of anxiety and depression.
